Day One

After a year of planning, replanning, getting a variance, putting the project out to bid...yesterday we began construction on our new front entry. Our house is a 1905 craftsman-style farm house in the bedroom community of La Cañada Flintridge, CA.

Before other houses were built around it there was a circular drive lined with palms that swung up in front of the house on a gentle slope from La Cañada Blvd. But in the 1960's two houses were built in what was the front yard.

Today the approach to the house is from the side and it is here that we are building a more substantial entry to greet our visitors.

About a year ago we hired our friend Escott Norton to design the new entry. He did a very nice job in designing and ushering us through the process. Yesterday Tom Poplin and the crew from Horizon Landscaping arrived at 8:30am to demolish the old overhang and fence which were falling down from termites and dry rot. They jack-hammered old concrete and saw cut the front landing in preparation for a new garden bed wall, iron fence and stone columns. The fun has begun.
